- My mother recounted the story of her childhood and subsequent exile to the United States. I feel tremendous peace of mind that my daughter will hear the details, in her grandmother’s own words, about the trials and tribulations, as well as the joys of my mother’s life. I would have never been able to give her that history lesson myself.

My father Elias always wanted to do a biography about his life, but due to health limitations he was unable to approach it in the traditional way. So when I learned about Video Journals Online, it was a wonderful opportunity to support my father with fulfilling this long-time wish! He was excited to participate. The process was a simple one, and Nancy Leve provided easy to understand steps for us along with a bank of questions to choose from. Two one-hour appointments were scheduled via Zoom.
On 4/13/22, he had a great session with Nancy, who made him feel totally comfortable, explaining not to worry she can edit anything out should he have an afterthought. It was like having a dear friend over for coffee as the facts, details, and milestones of my father’s life effortlessly flowed from his recollection in a natural conversation. Nancy also has the gift of tact, as she was able to delicately talk about my father’s raw grief, about our mother, who pre-deceased my father just a year earlier. Unfortunately, my father was never able to attend his second scheduled interview with Nancy, because he entered into at-home hospice, and became too ill to proceed.
When ready, I reached out and asked Nancy if she could assist us in completing his legacy video journal life story online. She suggested she interview us children for the second interview to complete his story, and also did an “after interview” with me to clarify some contradictory facts that had come out.
Throughout the process, Nancy cared very deeply about honoring the family, my father’s story, and desire for the integrity of information being presented, guided by the family. I’m crying as I type this review, because I’m so grateful, that at any time, our family can hear the stories of my father’s childhood, adulthood, life with our mother, and his ancestry as discussed by him along with the recollections of my siblings and myself.
The videos were shared at his Celebration of Life Reception and are still being shared today! My father, being the patriarch of his family and eldest of 9 children, left quite a legacy, touching us all. I am still receiving messages and feedback from family, saying how neat it is having been able to watch, and learn things they never knew from my father, about the family story. I am glad we didn’t wait any longer, to get my father’s life story and legacy told. I would recommend people don’t wait until their loved ones are ill or too sick to tell their story.
